I was parked in a lot off Otay Ranch Blvd when the call came in. Guy in the area, said his 2000 Audi TT was sitting dead in the parking structure near his office and he had somewhere to be in two hours.
He had dropped the fob getting out of the car. Heard it hit pavement, then heard it bounce somewhere it shouldn't have. Gone. He had a spare at home but home was not close, and he wasn't in a position to chase a tow truck to a dealer who wouldn't see him until three days from now anyway.
I was already nearby, so I pulled in.
The 2000 TT uses a remote flip key where the transponder chip lives inside the key head. The remote and the immobilizer are two separate systems doing two separate jobs. I connected to the OBD port and ran the immobilizer read. The module came back clean, one key registered, which matched what he told me.
I cut a new blade to the car, programmed the transponder side through the immobilizer, then synced the remote portion of the fob. Tested the blade in the door cylinder, tested the ignition, walked every button on the fob. Everything came back solid.
He made it to wherever he was going. His car never moved from the spot he left it. The dealer would have required a tow, an appointment, and a wait measured in days, not minutes. That's not a knock on the dealer, it's just how their system works. This is how mine works.
