Old Escondido on a Friday night has a different energy than the rest of Escondido. The older streets, the restaurants lit up, people actually dressed for the occasion. I was already in the area wrapping up another call when my phone went off at about 9pm.
A couple had come out after an anniversary dinner to find their 2011 Audi TT completely unresponsive to the fob. Nothing. No flash from the turn signals, no click from the doors. The factory fob on their TT is a 3-button remote flip key running a CR2032. When I got there I popped the battery cover and the cell inside measured close to dead. Swapped it for a fresh CR2032 from stock. Then I tried the re-sync sequence right there in the parking lot. No response. The remote side needed a full reprogram.
I ran a transponder check first to confirm the immobilizer was still paired. It was. The key would start the car, just no remote function. That told me exactly what the job was: reprogram the remote, not a full key replacement. I used my programming equipment to re-register the fob to the vehicle, tested all three buttons, walked both doors, and confirmed the blade deployed and retracted cleanly.
They were back in the car inside 30 minutes of my arrival. The dealer would have had them waiting through the weekend, then handed them a bill that would have made the anniversary dinner look cheap by comparison. A Friday night call is the same job either way when the parts and tools are already in the van.
