I got a call from a guy in North El Cajon, over near the older neighborhoods off Magnolia. His 1996 BMW Z3 was sitting in the driveway.

He had a key, but it wasn't his key. It was a copy someone had made years ago, probably at a hardware store, that cut the blade correctly but had no working transponder. Car would crank, idle for a second or two, then shut right down. He'd been chasing it for two weeks. New fuel pump relay, new battery, an afternoon with a mechanic friend who couldn't figure it out.
