I got a call from a guy in North El Cajon, over near the older neighborhoods off Magnolia. His 1996 BMW Z3 was sitting in the driveway. He had a key, but it wasn't his key. It was a copy someone had made years ago, probably at a hardware store, that cut the blade correctly but had no working transponder. Car would crank, idle for a second or two, then shut right down. He'd been chasing it for two weeks. New fuel pump relay, new battery, an afternoon with a mechanic friend who couldn't figure it out.

I pulled up to the car with my equipment, looked at the key, and knew before I even tested it. The head was the wrong profile for a BMW transponder key. Somebody had shaped the plastic close enough to fool the eye, but there was no chip inside doing anything useful.
I cut a proper replacement key blade to the vehicle, with a correct transponder, and enrolled it into the immobilizer on-site. The Z3 fired up and held idle the way a straight-six is supposed to. He stood there for a second and said he almost had the car towed to the dealer.
