2001 BMW Z3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 BMW Z3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked near the Sprouts at RB Town Center, standing next to her Z3 with the key in her hand and a look on her face like she had already accepted a bad afternoon.

The remote buttons had stopped working a couple weeks back. She had been living with it, using the key manually to lock and unlock the door. Then that morning she turned the key and the car started, ran for two seconds, and died. Tried again. Same thing. She figured it was all connected and called me before she called anyone else.

I got there and ran through it in order. The CR2032 was reading nearly flat on the meter. Not totally dead, just low enough to cause grief. That explained the button failure. The start-then-stall was a different story. On these Z3s, when the immobilizer does not complete its handshake properly, the engine management cuts fuel shortly after startup. The key was turning, the car was getting signal, but the communication was not finishing clean.

I had the right key blank in the van. Cut it to her vehicle, ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port to pair the transponder to her immobilizer, and seated a fresh CR2032. Tested the remote functions, tested a full cold start and let it idle, then walked the door lock, unlock, and trunk release to confirm everything was talking.

She asked how the dealer quote she had gotten the week before had been so high for what looked like a thirty-minute job. I told her the technology is real, the markup does not always match the labor. She saved a good chunk and did not have to arrange a tow or wait several days for a part.
