1998 BMW Z3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1998 BMW Z3 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the waterfront in Coronado Village. He had his 1998 BMW Z3 sitting there, and his only key was gone. Not at home, not at the office. Gone. He'd already been on hold with a dealer and they told him to tow it in and come back in a few days.

He found me online and called. First thing I asked was whether he had the VIN. He read it off the base of the windshield, right where I told him to look. That number told me what I needed to know about the security generation his car was running and what tools to bring. I told him to stay with the car and I was on my way.

When I got there he was sitting on the seawall, looking at this little roadster like it had personally let him down. I set up next to him on the street. Cut a replacement key blade to match his locks, got the transponder programmed to his immobilizer module, and tested it cold so he could watch the car fire up and stay running. That last part matters, because with these early immobilizer systems the key-starts-then-stalls is exactly what a bad program looks like, and I don't pack up until I know it's solid.

He drove home that night. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill he didn't want to think about. Doing it on site in Coronado Village was faster and cost him a fraction of that.
