I was parked near the Village in Rancho Santa Fe, between jobs, when a call came in from a woman who had just snapped her key blade off in the door lock of her 2000 BMW Z3. The blade portion was stuck in the cylinder. The fob body was in her hand, intact, but completely useless now.

I drove to her location. Got the blade fragment out of the lock first, which is its own small job that requires patience and the right extractors. Then I cut a new blade to her vehicle and got to work on programming.
The 2000 Z3 remote head key carries a transponder that has to be registered to the immobilizer. I connected my programmer to the OBD port, pulled up the key data, and added the new key. Then I verified the remote functions on all three buttons. Standing in the sun next to a roadster with the top down, I watched the locks cycle and confirmed the key started the car without hesitation.
She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her to ask them herself, but that she already had a working key and had not lost a full workday to a service bay.
