2002 BMW Z3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2002 BMW Z3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Ramona Country Estates, a retired engineer had been driving his Z3 on a single key for two years. He knew he needed a spare. He just kept finding reasons not to deal with it.

The nearest BMW dealer was a solid 30 minutes away, and he had no interest in freeway driving. He'd called them once to ask about a spare, heard the timeline and the quote, and quietly set the whole idea aside. Two years went by.

I pulled up to his place that morning. The Z3 was sitting in the garage looking exactly like a car someone had been babying. He walked me through what he had: one working key, no spare, no remote keyless for his wife who sometimes borrowed it.

On the 2002 Z3, the remote head key carries a transponder that needs to be registered with the immobilizer, and the remote function gets synced separately. I decoded the lock mechanically, cut a fresh key blade, handled the transponder enrollment through the immobilizer, and synced the remote. Then I did the same for a second key so he'd have a true spare.

He didn't leave the property. Both keys were in his hand before lunch. He said he wished he'd made the call two years earlier instead of letting the dealer quote sit in the back of his head.

That's the one I hear a lot out here. The dealer number scares people into doing nothing. Coming to Ramona Country Estates and getting the job done on site is a different experience entirely.
