I got a call from a guy over at the community center lot in Carlton Hills on a Saturday morning. Soccer practice, bunch of kids waiting, and his 2009 Enclave was stuck.

He'd already paid someone else. A different locksmith had come out, cut a key, tried a program, and told him the body control module was shot when the car refused to stay running. Cranks, fires, dies in two seconds, every time. The other tech took his money and left him with a key that didn't work and a diagnosis that wasn't right.

I've seen this before on these Enclaves. The immobilizer is particular about how the security access sequence is handled. If a tech doesn't get through the timed access window cleanly, the module rejects the key and logs a fault. The next attempt starts in a degraded state. A second bad attempt on top of the first one makes it look like a hardware failure when it's really a procedural one.

I verified the mechanical cut first with a decoder tool, confirmed the blade was correct for the cylinder. Then I connected through the OBD port, cleared the faulted attempt the previous tech had left behind, waited for the module to come out of lockout, entered the security access window at the right moment, and ran the transponder relearn clean. The security warning light went off. Engine started and stayed running.

He watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When the car idled clean he just nodded and said "that's it?"

That's it. The module was fine the whole time.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he got it done in the parking lot instead of waiting days for a dealer appointment.
