2013 Buick Encore
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

Years, with normal use. The programming itself doesn't degrade or expire. What actually wears out over time is the CR2032 battery, the rubber button pads, and sometimes the blade pivot if the fob gets rough treatment. Battery swap every couple of years is the main maintenance. The rest is just keeping it out of the bottom of a bag where the pivot takes the weight of everything else.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We warranty our work. That said, when a freshly programmed key drops out on a 2013 Encore, the vehicle is usually the story, not the key. A weak or failing battery in the car can cause the security system to drop learned keys from memory. It can look like a bad program when it's actually a low-voltage issue. We come back, check the actual cause, and sort it out.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2013 Encore. Can you still make a replacement without a working key?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this vehicle is a standard job. It takes longer than add-a-key because the procedure is different when there's no existing key to reference, but it's done through the diagnostic port and doesn't require a dealer. I verify ownership with your ID and VIN, get into the body control module, clear the old key memory, and register the new key fresh.

Q: The remote buttons on my Encore fob work sometimes but not others. What's going on?

Intermittent remote function on these is almost always one of three things: a CR2032 that's reading low voltage under load even if it tests okay at rest, a worn contact pad under one of the four buttons, or a slightly bent battery clip inside the fob that loses contact when the case flexes. Swap the battery first with a fresh CR2032, not a leftover from a junk drawer.

2013 Buick Encore Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in the Bancroft area of Spring Valley when the call came in. A woman had snapped the flip blade off her Encore key inside her purse.

The blade detached at the pivot, which happens on these with enough wear. She still had the fob body and could see the broken blade sitting at the bottom of her bag. Car was locked, blade was useless, and she had somewhere to be.

She had her registration in the car, so she read me the VIN over the phone before I parked behind her. That part matters.

I pulled the Encore up in the system on the drive over. Confirmed the key type, prepped the correct blank, and had everything staged before I knocked on the door of her unit to let her know I was outside.

The car was in her parking spot. I got in using the door lock cylinder, confirmed the vehicle with the VIN plate on the dash, and went to work. Cutting the replacement blade to her vehicle took a couple of minutes. Then I ran the programming procedure through the diagnostic port to register the new fob, with her existing working key present to make the add-a-key process go cleanly. Tested all four buttons. Tested the blade in the ignition. Tested the door lock and unlock cycle.

She came down with about seven minutes to spare before she had to leave. The dealer had quoted her two days because they needed to order the blank.

I had it on the truck.

Buick Encore Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys?▼

We use blanks built to OEM spec, meaning the transponder chip, the fob shell, and the blade all match what the 2013 Encore expects. The factory ID on your fob is a reference point we verify when sourcing the replacement, not something we guess at. Aftermarket blanks vary in quality and some don't program cleanly or hold the program long-term. We don't use those. If a blank doesn't pass our pre-programming check, it doesn't go on your key ring.
