2023 Buick Encore
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming take once you're at my car?

For a 2023 Encore where at least one working key still exists, adding a second fob through the diagnostic port runs about 15 to 20 minutes once I'm connected. All-keys-lost is longer. The module reset has a timed sequence built in before it will accept new key registrations, so budget closer to 45 minutes for that scenario. Either way, you're not waiting around for hours. I test every button function before I leave.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a lot. The dealer timeline usually goes: call to check availability, schedule an appointment, wait for the fob to be ordered if it's not in stock, then bring the vehicle in. That's often several days, sometimes longer. I carry stock on the van and handle the whole job in one visit. Phone call to working key, same day.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Encore. Can I program it myself or do I still need someone?

You still need someone with the right equipment. The 2023 Encore does not have a self-programming sequence for smart fobs. Registration has to go through the diagnostic port, and the module has to write the new fob's data. An unprogrammed fob won't unlock the doors or communicate with the vehicle security system at all. Buying the fob separately isn't a bad move if you got a good price on it, but the programming step requires professional tools regardless.

Q: My Encore starts fine but the fob range seems really short lately. Is something wrong with the key?

Short range before a total failure is a classic low-battery sign on this fob. The CR2032 can hold enough charge to wake the module at close range while still being too weak to reach the car from across a parking lot. Swap the battery first. If range is still off after a fresh CR2032 is properly seated, then it's worth checking whether the fob took any physical damage or got wet.

2023 Buick Encore Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Otay Ranch called me on a Sunday morning. He'd just landed from a long overseas trip, made it all the way to the long-term lot at the airport, and his 2023 Buick Encore sat there completely dark. Fob did nothing. He pressed it a dozen times standing next to the car.

His checked bag had the emergency insert key inside it. Already on the carousel, already gone through baggage claim, already in his hands by the time he realized the fob was dead. But he hadn't thought to use the insert because he hadn't needed it in months. He called two shops. One said bring the car in. The other said they could schedule him for later in the week. He called me after that.

I was there in under an hour. Got the door open, swapped the CR2032, reseated the battery against the contacts, and walked every function: handle unlock, lock, remote start range, and the hatch button. Everything came back clean. His fob hadn't lost its registration to the module. It was just dead.

He asked me what a dealer would have done differently. Honestly, probably the same battery swap. Just not on a Sunday, not at the car, and not without an appointment first.

I left him a spare CR2032 for the glovebox. He drove home that morning.

Buick Encore Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Dealer service departments close in the late afternoon on weekdays and have tight Saturday windows. A Friday night lockout or a dead fob on a Sunday morning means you're waiting until Monday at the earliest if you go that route. We work evenings and weekends because that's exactly when most people find out they have a problem.
