2022 Buick Encore
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the FCC ID for the 2022 Buick Encore smart key fob?

The factory FCC ID is printed on the back of the fob itself. When you call us, reading that off takes about three seconds and tells us immediately whether we have the right blank in stock before we leave for Carlsbad. Saves everyone time.

Q: How fast can you get to Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad?

Typical arrival in that area runs 15 to 25 minutes from when you call. No appointment window, no scheduling days out. Call, confirm the vehicle, and a tech is moving. The smart key work on the 2022 Encore gets done on site, so there's no tow involved and no waiting room.

Q: I have a spare fob for my 2022 Encore that I bought online. Can I program it myself at home?

No. The 2022 Encore smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. No ignition turns, no button combinations, no door-open trick. That kind of DIY relearn exists on some older GM vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. This is a different setup entirely. The fob you bought online needs to be programmed through the diagnostic port using professional equipment that communicates with the vehicle's security system.

Q: My 2022 Encore start button says it can't detect the key, but the fob battery is fine. What's actually going on?

A few things can cause that warning even when the battery tests good. First, location matters more than people expect. The fob needs to be within the cabin, close to the start button or center console area. Leaving it in a bag on the back seat sometimes puts it at the edge of the read range, especially if the bag has a lot of metal objects near it that can interfere.

2022 Buick Encore Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a record swap that sets up near Bressi Ranch every few weeks, and I got a call from the parking lot one Saturday afternoon. Guy had a 2022 Buick Encore, one key, and the fob had stopped responding. Doors wouldn't unlock from outside, start button was giving him a key-not-detected warning, and he'd already bought a CR2032 at the drugstore down the street and swapped it himself. Still nothing.

He'd been on a forum the night before. Someone told him the Encore needed a "Buick specialist" for anything beyond a battery swap, and that a mobile locksmith couldn't touch the immobilizer on these. Two locksmiths had already turned him down over the phone. He was half convinced he was getting towed to a dealer and losing his whole weekend.

I pulled up, opened the fob on the hood of my van, and found the issue before I even got to programming. The battery was in, but the positive contact clip had a small upward bend on it, probably from the original battery being pried out at some point. The new CR2032 wasn't making solid contact. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and the fob woke right up. Range came back, touch unlock came back, the dash stopped complaining.

He didn't need a new fob at all. I still walked every button and confirmed the start sequence was reading correctly before I packed up. When the car actually misbehaves versus when a contact is just loose, you want to know the difference before you leave a job.

He mentioned the dealer quote on the way out, more as a joke than a complaint. I didn't need to say anything.

What battery does the 2022 Buick Encore key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's a common size and you can find one at any drugstore or hardware store. The swap itself is something most people can do at home: find the small slot on the fob edge, use a flathead wrapped in a cloth so you don't gouge the plastic, pop the case, swap the battery, and make sure it seats flat with solid contact on both sides of the clip.
