Holding the fob there and pressing the start button is how the vehicle picks up the key signal when the battery is too low for normal proximity operation. I bought a replacement fob online for my XT4. Can I just have it programmed, or is there something I need to check first?

On this generation of GM smart keys, fobs lock to a VIN once they have been through their first programming cycle. A used fob in that state has to be cleared before it can be paired to your car, and that clearing requires the same diagnostic equipment as the programming itself.

So if someone sold you a "pre-programmed" fob or one listed as "ready to use," slow down. Bring it in or call me first before assuming it will work. Takes two minutes to sort out what you have.

My XT4 is showing a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What is actually going on?

A fresh battery rules out the obvious, but it does not rule out everything. A few things show up repeatedly on these: the battery seated slightly off, a contact inside the fob that got bent when someone pried it open instead of using the release, and interference from objects near the fob like certain phone cases or key bundles with other RF devices on them.

If the warning is consistent rather than intermittent, and the battery is genuinely good and seated correctly, the next step is to check whether the vehicle security system still sees the fob at all when you hold it directly to the start button. If it starts that way but not from your pocket, the fob antenna is the issue. If it does not respond even held to the button, the fob itself or the pairing needs to be looked at. That is a job for diagnostic equipment, not guesswork.
