I got a call from a parking structure in Alpine Village after hours. Guy had one fob, no spare, and it was gone. He'd checked every pocket, the elevator floor, the lobby. Nothing. He was standing next to his 2013 Cadillac XTS deciding whether to tow it somewhere and deal with it in the morning.
First thing I did was keep him on the phone and slow him down. He didn't need a tow. He needed a VIN. I told him to look at the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side. He found it in about ten seconds, read it off, and I already knew exactly what I was building before I pulled out of my driveway.
The XTS takes a 5-button smart fob with a CR2032 and the transponder has to be enrolled to the body control module through the diagnostic port. No shortcut on that. I had the correct uncut fob shell, the right battery, and my programming gear already loaded. While I drove, he texted me a photo of his registration just to lock in the ownership verification before I arrived.
Under the structure lights I built the fob, programmed it to his XTS, and walked through every button. Lock, unlock, the trunk release, everything. Then I watched him start the car and let him sit in it for a minute before I packed up.
He asked about his old fob, the one that was lost. I told him it was now erased from the system. If someone finds it in that parking structure, it won't start his car.
The dealer was closed, and even if they weren't, he was looking at a tow charge on top of whatever they'd want for the key. He drove home that night. That's the whole job.
