I got a call from The Cays in Coronado late on a weeknight. The woman on the other end had borrowed a neighbor's phone. Her purse had been grabbed off a restaurant patio, wallet, phone, and car keys all gone together. Her 2012 Chrysler 300 was sitting in a nearby lot and she had no way to get into it or start it.
She had already called the dealer. They told her roommate the fob would need to be ordered and the car towed in, and that the whole job would stretch across several business days. The estimate was not small. The dealer also flagged that the stolen fob could still open the doors until the key memory was wiped, which was the right call to flag but not something they could handle that same night.
I drove out to Coronado. All-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare to an existing working key. When a working key is present, the car already trusts it and you are just adding to the list. All-keys-lost means clearing the entire key memory first so the stolen fob is dead to the vehicle, then programming fresh from scratch. I pulled the PIN from the immobilizer module through the diagnostic port, cleared the old key data, and programmed two new fobs. Then I cut the emergency blade in each one and tested every function, doors, trunk, start.
Her roommate pulled up just as I was finishing the second key. Both fobs worked. The stolen one was erased from the system and could no longer start the engine, though it could still physically turn a door lock cylinder. She understood the distinction and was comfortable with it.
The dealer option would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that was a fraction of what they quoted, in my favor. She drove home that night with two working keys.
