I got a call from The Cays in Coronado late on a weeknight. The woman on the other end had borrowed a neighbor's phone. Her roommate pulled up just as I was finishing the second key. Both fobs worked. The stolen one was erased from the system and could no longer start the engine, though it could still physically turn a door lock cylinder. She understood the distinction and was comfortable with it.
The dealer option would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that was a fraction of what they quoted, in my favor. She drove home that night with two working keys.
