A guy out near the RB Town Center in Rancho Bernardo called me on a Saturday morning. He had a 2013 Dodge Dart and one fob that was getting flaky. Walk up to the car, grab the handle, nothing. Try again, it unlocks. Push the start button, warning light, try again, starts fine. It had been doing this for two weeks and he kept talking himself out of dealing with it.
He'd already put a new CR2032 in. Said he watched a video online about doing a self-program sequence with the ignition. Tried it a few times and nothing changed. That's because the Dart's proximity system doesn't have a driver-accessible add-a-key procedure. The video he found was for a different generation, different key type entirely. A lot of that information floating around online just doesn't sort by year and key system the way it should.
I met him in the parking area near his building. Pulled up the vehicle data, read the PIN, and connected to the immobilizer to check fob registration status. The existing fob was still properly enrolled, which told me this was a range and communication issue, not a lost pairing. I opened the fob, found a hairline crack in the housing near the battery door, and the CR2032 he'd installed was sitting slightly off-axis. The contact tab on the negative side had a faint depression from where the old battery had pressed unevenly over years of use.
New housing, verified contact tension, reseated the cell, confirmed enrollment through the tool. Then I walked every function, proximity detection, handle touch, push start, all five buttons including the trunk release. Everything came back solid.
He had a second fob that came with the car but had been sitting in a drawer unused for years. We enrolled that one too while I was already connected. Two working fobs before I packed up, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for diagnosis and a new fob on order.
