I got a call from a guy in South Poway who was visiting a friend's place off Scripps Poway Parkway. He had a 2007 Ford Fusion and one working key he'd been running as his daily driver for two years. He wanted a spare he could actually trust, not just a backup that lives in a drawer and maybe works when needed.
First thing he asked me, standing next to the car in the driveway: "Is the key you make going to be as good as what Ford gives me?"
It's a fair question and I give it a real answer. The factory fob for this car - the 3-button remote head key with the Ford oval on the face - comes from a supplier that also provides to the aftermarket. The blade profile, the transponder chip generation, the circuit board, the button feel. Quality aftermarket blanks are built to the same specs. The functional difference in daily use is nothing, assuming the locksmith isn't buying the cheapest shells available.
I cut the blade on my machine to match his existing key, verified the cut depth at the tip and shoulder before I touched the programming side. The onboard add-a-key sequence on a 2007 Fusion is available when you have two working keys, but he only had one. That meant using the programmer through the OBD port to add the new key without wiping the original.
About 25 minutes on site. Both keys tested cold, ignition starts, remote lock and unlock working at normal range. He kept asking if there was more to it. Sometimes there isn't.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a figure that made him call me instead. I just said I hear that a lot.
