I was parked off Midland Road near the train depot in Old Poway on a Thursday afternoon when the call came in. Dad, daycare lot, 2013 Fusion. His only smart key had stopped being recognized by the car. The door handles were not responding to touch, the start button just sat there blinking, and the key-not-detected warning was up on the dash. He had already tried holding the fob closer to the start button, which sometimes works when a battery is almost dead. It did not work this time.

At that point I knew we were doing a full smart key replacement, not a battery fix.
I programmed the new fob on site through the diagnostic port, confirmed the start button woke up, walked every door to check handle touch unlock, and verified the mechanical insert key worked the lock cylinder as backup. The whole thing was done before his kid's class let out.
