1998 Ford Windstar
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming take once you are at my van?

On the 1998 Windstar, the remote programming sequence involves a timed security window built into the vehicle's system. Once that window opens, registering the fob itself is quick. Total on-site time generally runs somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes depending on whether you still have a working key or not. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because there are additional steps to clear the old key data before new ones can be registered.

Q: Can you get this done faster than a dealer?

On a 1998 Windstar, yes, by a wide margin. The actual work is not what takes long at a dealership. It's the scheduling, the parts availability on an older vehicle, and the shop workflow. Owners report waiting days just to be seen, and that assumes the service department is willing to prioritize a van from this era. I come to you, same day, with the parts already loaded. The work happens wherever your van is sitting.

Q: My Windstar fob stopped working but the ignition key still works fine. Are those two separate things?

Yes, completely separate on this generation. The 1998 Windstar uses a standalone remote fob for the lock and unlock functions. The ignition key is its own physical key. If your fob dies, you can still get in and drive using the key blade in the door lock and ignition. You just lose the remote convenience until the fob gets replaced and reprogrammed. This is actually one of the more common calls I get on older Windstars.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

There is an onboard programming procedure for this generation of Ford remote. It involves a specific sequence using the door lock and the ignition, and it only works if you already have at least one working programmed key to start the sequence. If you're starting with zero working fobs, the onboard method won't get you there and you'll need someone with the right equipment.

1998 Ford Windstar Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Flinn Springs, there's a trailhead most Lakeside locals know. A guy parked his 1998 Windstar there on a Saturday morning and came back to find the fob unresponsive. Doors were locked. He had his mechanical key to get in and start the van, but the remote had fully quit on him, and he had no spare.

He found me online and I drove out to his GPS pin with everything already in the van.

When I got there, I opened the fob on the hood. The CR2032 was still reading voltage but the contacts inside had corroded pretty badly, the kind of surface oxidation that builds up over years on a van that's been sitting in heat. Cleaned everything up, seated a fresh battery, and tested it. Nothing. The fob itself was done.

I built him a replacement on the spot and programmed it to the van right there in the dirt parking area. The whole thing took less than 45 minutes from the time I pulled in.

He mentioned he had called a dealer earlier in the week about a different issue and they quoted him a long wait just to get on the schedule. Getting this handled in a trailhead parking lot, same day, for a fraction of what that kind of trip would cost, seemed to land differently once it was actually done.

Ford Windstar Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Windstar after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Ford dealer service departments keep regular weekday hours and limited Saturday windows, and a 1998 van is not going to be their scheduling priority. Parts for an older fob like this one sometimes have to be sourced before the job even starts on the dealer side. I work nights and weekends because that is exactly when people find out they have a key problem.
