It was early morning in Bancroft, the part of Spring Valley where the streets are quiet until they're not. A guy called me from his driveway at 6:50am. His 2003 Windstar wouldn't respond to the fob -- doors weren't unlocking, no response at all. He'd been clicking it for ten minutes standing in the dark.

I pulled up, popped the remote head key open on the hood of my van. The CR2032 inside was so depleted it barely registered. Swapped it, reseated the cover, handed it back. Nothing. Still dead on the remote functions. That told me the battery wasn't the whole story.
I connected through the OBD port and pulled up the fob programming sequence. These early-2000s Ford vans have a specific enrollment process, and when a key gets dropped or the battery runs fully dead for a long stretch, the fob ID can fall out of the module's memory even if the transponder side still works. That's exactly what happened here. The engine would have cranked fine with the key blade, but the remote was a ghost to the van.
Reprogrammed the remote head key to the van, tested all three buttons, walked the doors. Everything came back.
He said the dealer quoted him a new key plus labor and told him to come in on Thursday. This was Monday. I was done before 7:30am, for a fraction of what they wanted, and he made it to work on time.
