2017 Genesis G80 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Up in Mt. Helix, a law student had already paid another locksmith to program a smart key to his 2017 Genesis G80. That locksmith ran a procedure that didn't match the car, got partway through, and bailed. He pocketed his fee, told the student to go to the dealer, and left. After that, the G80 wouldn't recognize any fob at all. Not the new one. Not the original.
The student called me after finding my reviews. First thing he said was that he was not in the mood to pay again for nothing. I told him I understood and that we'd figure out what was actually there before anything else happened.
I plugged into the OBD port and pulled a stack of faults sitting in the immobilizer. The previous attempt had left the module in a confused state, cycling on a partially written key registration that never completed. The car was stuck. I cleared the fault codes, confirmed the module came back to a clean baseline, then ran the full smart key learning sequence correctly from scratch. His original fob came back online. The G80 started clean.
The dealer had already quoted him a significant sum just to diagnose the damage, with programming on top of that. I didn't charge him separately for the cleanup, because clearing the mess left by a bad procedure is just part of doing the job right.
He stood in the driveway for a second after it started, just looking at the car like he wasn't quite ready to believe it. Then he went inside to study.
