2018 Genesis G80
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2018 Genesis G80 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy down in Downtown IB waved me down in a parking lot near the water. He had his 2018 G80 running, keys in hand, and a look on his face like he was about to make a decision he wasn't totally sure about.

His situation was this: he had one working fob left. His second fob had died months back and he kept putting off dealing with it. Now the surviving fob was doing something weird. Some mornings the car would read it fine. Other mornings he'd get a key-not-detected warning on the dash and have to sit there cycling through it. He'd already tried a new battery. Still intermittent.

I asked how long ago he put the battery in. He said a few weeks. I asked if he checked the contact tension when he swapped it. He hadn't. I popped the fob open right there on the hood of my van. The negative contact had just a little give to it, not making full pressure against the cell. Bent it back into position, reseated the CR2032, and snapped the case together.

Started the car three times in a row. No hesitation, no warning.

That was the easy part. The part he actually needed was a second fob, because running on one key for a vehicle this sophisticated is not a position you want to be in permanently. We did the programming through the OBD port, registered both fobs in the same session so nothing got wiped, tested lock, unlock, trunk release, and remote start function, then walked every door to confirm the passive entry handles were reading correctly.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him put it off for months. I get that reaction a lot. Mobile changes the math.
