1997 Honda Del Sol
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key, and is that really all the 1997 Del Sol uses?

Yes, that's the whole setup. A mechanical key is a metal blade cut to a specific profile that matches your locks and ignition cylinder. No remote. No fob. No battery. The 1997 Del Sol came from the factory this way. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. If the blade profile matches the cylinder, the car starts.

Q: What do you actually use to make a replacement key for a 1997 Del Sol?

For a purely mechanical key like this one, the work is in the cutting, not the software. I either decode the lock cylinder directly using a decoding tool, or I pull the key code from the door lock if it's accessible. From there I cut a new blade on my mobile key machine and test it in both the door and the ignition before I leave. No OBD port, no scan tool, no programming sequence involved.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my Del Sol if I have zero working keys left?

Yes, and it's actually a common scenario on cars this age. When there's no working key at all, I go straight to the lock. The door lock cylinder or the ignition cylinder can be decoded directly, meaning I read the physical cuts from the lock itself and use that information to cut a new key. It takes a little longer than duplicating a working key, but it's entirely doable on-site without towing the car anywhere.

Q: My Del Sol ignition is worn and the key turns hard or sticks. Does that affect getting a replacement key cut?

It can. On a car from this era, the ignition cylinder and the key wear together over time. A key cut from the original code might fit perfectly, but if the cylinder pins are worn unevenly, the new key can feel different than your worn original did. Worn ignition cylinders on late-90s Hondas are a known issue after decades of use. If your key turns stiff or catches, it's worth having the cylinder looked at the same time.

1997 Honda Del Sol Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Buena Creek, near Vista, I got a call from a guy who had just locked his only key inside his 1997 Del Sol at a storage facility. He was mid-move, had a rental truck reserved, and the whole timeline was about to fall apart over a single metal key sitting on the seat.

He had already called the dealer. They told him they'd need to check parts availability and get him in later in the week. For a move that was happening the next morning, later in the week was the same as never.

I drove out that afternoon. The Del Sol's door lock gave me what I needed to decode the cut. I pulled the code, cut a new key blade on the spot, and walked him through testing it in the door and the ignition both before I closed up my bag.

He was back to loading boxes inside of an hour. The dealer conversation never came up again after that. It was just a key, cut right, done the same day he called.

Honda Del Sol Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before anyone touches your car. First, ask for a firm price for your specific vehicle on the phone. A real locksmith can quote a mechanical key job for a 1997 Honda Del Sol without needing to "see it first. Second, look at how they show up. An unmarked van, no company name, no way to verify who you called is showing up is a pattern that shows up repeatedly in news reports about scam operations.
