Yes, and this comes up more than you would expect on Jaguars that have changed hands a few times. The 2018 F-Type smart fob has an emergency blade tucked inside the housing. On the F-Type specifically, the door lock cylinder is hidden behind a cover on the door handle surround. If that blade is uncut, damaged, or missing, you have no mechanical backup when the battery dies and the passive transponder backup is not cooperating.

We can cut a new blade to your vehicle, transfer the electronics into a replacement shell if yours is cracked, and verify the blade operates the door lock before we leave. If the internal circuit board is damaged rather than just the shell, that becomes a full key replacement with programming, done on site. Either way, you are not waiting for a dealer parts order.

What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2018 F-Type use it?

Your 2018 F-Type uses a 5-button fob with a CR2032 battery. There is an emergency blade folded inside the housing for situations where the passive system is not responding or the fob battery is completely dead. On the F-Type, the door lock cylinder is accessed through a removable cover on the handle area. That blade gives you a mechanical backup entry path.

The fob does not need to be inserted anywhere during normal use. It just needs to be close enough for the antennas in the car to detect it.

My F-Type is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Start with a fresh CR2032 in the fob. A low battery on these can produce exactly that warning before it dies completely, and it is easy to dismiss because the fob still works at close range for a while before it stops entirely.

If you have a second fob, test it. If both fobs are throwing the same warning, the problem is almost certainly on the vehicle side, not the keys. Forum threads on Jaguar owner communities have documented cases where antenna or module issues caused the warning on multiple fobs simultaneously.

There is also a backup: hold the fob directly against the start button. The F-Type has a passive transponder reader built into or near that button for exactly this situation. Even with a fully dead fob battery, that direct contact can let the car read the transponder and allow a start.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I need someone with equipment?

If you already bought the fob, it is not wasted. Bring the vehicle and the unprogrammed fob to me and I can do the pairing on site in Bancroft. Just make sure the fob you bought matches the factory FCC ID on your original fob before assuming it will work.

What happens if I lose both keys? Can a new key still be made for the F-Type?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a harder job than adding a spare, but it is absolutely doable. When there are no working fobs left, the vehicle's security system has to be reset through the diagnostic port before any new key can be enrolled. The old key records get cleared, and the new fob gets registered as the first authorized key.

It takes longer than a standard add-a-key job because of the reset procedure and the verification steps involved. Plan for the job to take more time on site than a simple spare. I carry the equipment needed for this in the van, so it does not require a dealer visit or a tow. I have done these in Spring Valley and the surrounding area many times.
