Out near the Viejas Area in Alpine, I got a call from a guy who stocked shelves overnight and needed his car working before his shift. His 2011 Forte had a smart key a different locksmith had made for him about two weeks earlier.
It worked at first. Then it started getting inconsistent, locking and unlocking fine but sometimes failing to authorize the start. By the time he called me, it was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash most mornings.
He thought it was an electrical problem with the car. I told him to hold off on that assumption.

The previously programmed key had an issue with how it was registered, and the immobilizer was not consistently recognizing it as valid. This is not always apparent right after programming. The car may accept a marginal key initially and then fail it across subsequent drive cycles as the security system does its deeper verification pass.
I cleared the enrolled keys, registered a correctly paired replacement fob with a fresh battery, and verified function across multiple start cycles right there in the lot.
He asked what the dealer would have charged and how long they would have taken. I told him days for an appointment and a lot more money. He just nodded and went to work.
