Worn flip keys on Kia are one of the calls where the dealer quote and the actual fix are totally different jobs. The Kia flip key is a folding blade with a plastic housing that takes daily abuse. After years the plastic cracks, the button pads tear, and the blade pivot gets loose. The dealer wants to sell a brand new key, cut and programmed, at $349. Most of the time the chip and circuit board inside are fine.
A fleet dispatcher at the oil change shop near Carlton Hills had two company cars with beat-up flip keys. One 2015 Kia Forte had a key held together with tape. He called the dealer for a quote on replacing both and the number made him look for alternatives.
I used my VVDI Key Tool to verify the ID46 transponder data on each key was still good, then swapped the electronics into fresh housings and cut new blades. His keys used FCC ID OSLOKA-OKA870T, the 4-button flip configuration.
His total for both cars was less than the dealer wanted for one. Each ran about $158 per key. Dealer quoted $349 per car.
