I got a call from a guy in Carlton Hills, over in Santee. He was already frustrated before I picked up. A different locksmith had been out, charged him full price, and left him with a key that didn't work right.
The symptom was specific: the car would crank, fire up for about two seconds, and then die. Every time. That pattern is the immobilizer cutting things off after a failed key registration. It's not a mechanical problem. It's the security system accepting the key signal temporarily but not writing it to permanent memory. The first locksmith had apparently called it a bad module and walked.
There was no module problem.
I checked the key blade first, confirmed the cut was correct for the vehicle. Then I connected through the OBD port with my programmer, pulled the existing key data, and cleared it out. The immobilizer on these requires a PIN-based security sequence, and it has to be completed in the right order or the car does exactly what his was doing: starts briefly, stalls, and refuses to stay running. I ran the full registration sequence clean, confirmed the new key data was written to permanent memory, and watched the engine idle without cutting out.
Then I worked every one of the four buttons on the fob until I was satisfied. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All of it responding before I handed it back.
He showed me the receipt from the first guy. He'd already paid once for a job that wasn't finished. Coming out of pocket again, even for less, wasn't something he was happy about. I get that. All I could tell him was that this time I could show him the confirmation on the screen, and the car would prove it on the first start.
