The Crosby is a gated golf community in Rancho Santa Fe, and the people who live there are not used to waiting. So when a resident called me saying he had a broken key situation on his 2019 Forte, I expected the usual impatience. What I did not expect was the actual problem.
He had snapped the emergency insert blade trying to get into his car manually after the fob stopped working. The blade broke inside the door lock cylinder. He had already called a shop that quoted him a cylinder replacement, new key, and labor. He was not happy about it.
I drove out to The Crosby and took a look. The fragment was clean inside the cylinder, no deformation, no damage to the wafers. I extracted it without touching the lock internals. Then I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, cut a new blade to match, and used diagnostic equipment through the OBD port to register the new smart key to the vehicle's immobilizer. Tested all four buttons, tested proximity start, confirmed the key-not-detected warning cleared.
The cylinder is still original. The car looks exactly the way it did before the key broke. He got back in the same morning for a fraction of what the shop wanted.
That other quote involved drilling. Drilling should be the last option on a modern lock, not the first one.
