The CSUSM area keeps me busy on weekday afternoons, mostly students and staff who parked in the morning and came back to a problem. This one was a little different.
A guy had moved into an apartment near campus a few weeks earlier. Somewhere in the move, one of his two fobs for his 2023 Forte disappeared. He'd been down to a single key for a month, figured he'd deal with it eventually. Then he locked that last fob inside the car.
He called around. First call went to a Kia dealer. They told him all-keys-lost on a push-to-start Forte was dealer-only, minimum two days, tow the car in. He called me after that.
I drove out to him. The car was sitting in a lot near the university, locked, no keys anywhere. All-keys-lost on this generation means the immobilizer system has to be fully cleared before anything new will register. You back up the key data first, then pull the PIN, then wipe the old key memory and enroll fresh fobs one at a time. It takes patience more than magic.
I used my diagnostic equipment to pull the PIN from the vehicle without opening the dash. Once I had it, the rest moved steadily. New fobs went in, each one held near the start button during the enrollment count. Tested every button, tested the start, tested the door handles. Everything came up clean.
He had two working keys again inside of an hour. The dealer's two-day timeline with a tow was never the only option. It just felt that way until it wasn't.
