A guy in Bressi Ranch called me on a Tuesday morning. He had one key for his 2012 Range Rover Sport and the start button had started being moody. Sometimes it saw the fob right away, sometimes he was sitting there holding it up to the button like he was trying to negotiate with the car.

I straightened the contact, reseated the CR2032, and tested it against the start button ten times in a row, different distances, fob at different angles. Solid every time.

Then we talked about the real situation. He had one key. One. For a vehicle that needs JLR diagnostic equipment to enroll a replacement and has to have the blade cut to spec. If that fob went fully dead or got lost, he was looking at an all-keys-lost job, which is longer, more involved, and costs more than adding a spare while a working key is present.

He had me do the spare on the spot. Both keys enrolled, blade cut, every button tested, done in his driveway. He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him just for the parts alone.

The dealer, by the way, had also told him it would take a couple of weeks to get the key in. He mentioned that almost as an afterthought, like he had already made peace with it. I didn't say anything. I just handed him two working keys.
