I got a call from a guy in Bancroft, Spring Valley, parked in his own driveway. Said his 2021 Range Rover Sport had been acting strange for about a week and finally just stopped recognizing the fob altogether. The dash was showing a key warning, the engine wouldn't start, and his backup fob was at his office across town.

I opened the fob on the tailgate, pulled the battery, and the contacts had a thin film of corrosion on them, nothing dramatic, just enough to kill the connection intermittently until it gave out completely. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and held it to the start button.
Nothing.
That's when I knew the fob had dropped off the vehicle's registered key list, probably from too many failed communication attempts while the battery was dying. I connected to the OBD port, pulled up the key management system, confirmed the fob was no longer paired, and went through the programming sequence to re-enroll it. The whole process on a 2021 Sport takes longer than people expect because the security handshake between the fob and the vehicle modules isn't instant. You wait it out.
About 45 minutes after I arrived, the fob unlocked the doors from a normal distance, the dash cleared, and the engine started on the first press.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait just to get an appointment, and then potentially longer if a new fob needed to be ordered. He seemed genuinely surprised the whole thing wrapped up in his driveway before lunch.
