I got a call from a guy in Shadowridge, over near the newer builds off Melrose Drive. His 2020 Range Rover Sport had been showing an intermittent key-not-detected warning for about two weeks, and then one morning it just stopped responding entirely. Fob did nothing. Car wouldn't unlock from the handle. He'd already replaced the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move, and it didn't change a thing.
When I pulled up, he met me in the driveway looking like he'd already mentally written the check to the dealer. He'd called them the day before. They told him to bring it in, said they'd need to diagnose it and possibly order parts, and gave him a timeline that started at ten business days just for the parts phase. He had one backup key that still worked, barely, and that was the only reason the car wasn't a doorstop.
I went through the fob first. The battery contact looked fine. Then I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port and pulled the key management module data. It was communicating, but it was logging faults related to the key it couldn't see. The working backup fob confirmed the module itself wasn't dead, which was the good news. The fob that failed had an internal fault. Not a battery issue. Not a programming dropout. The fob itself had gone bad, which does happen on these.
I had a compatible replacement in the van, cut the emergency blade to his vehicle, and ran the programming sequence on site. Registered the new fob, erased the dead one from the system, and walked every function: handle unlock, lock, the full button set, and confirmed the car saw the key at normal range before I closed anything up.
He saved a significant amount compared to the dealer estimate he'd gotten over the phone, and he didn't lose his vehicle for two weeks. The whole job was done in his driveway before he finished his coffee.
