The harder part is everything before that. If the dealer doesn't have the fob in stock, you're waiting on a parts order. Then there's the standard service bay overhead: writing the repair order, dispatch, pulling parts, finding a free tech with the right diagnostic subscription active. What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2012 CT?

Your 2012 CT uses a proximity-based smart key system. The fob talks to antenna loops built into the door handles and the interior, and the car is constantly listening for an authorized signal when you approach. Touch the door handle and if the fob is in range, it unlocks. Get in, press the start button with your foot on the brake, and the immobilizer checks the fob signal one more time before allowing the engine to start.

The fob has four buttons and also contains an emergency metal key blade that tucks inside the housing. If the fob battery dies completely, you can still use that blade to access the vehicle mechanically, then hold the fob directly against the start button to give the immobilizer enough signal to authorize the start even with a dead battery.

None of this works with an unprogrammed fob. The immobilizer only recognizes keys that have been registered to your specific vehicle. A blank fob or one registered to a different car gets rejected every time.

Why does getting a key at the dealer take so long compared to a mobile locksmith?

Once it's there, you need an appointment slot that lines up with a tech who has the diagnostic software active. Then the actual service visit has overhead that has nothing to do with your key.

My 2012 CT is showing a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause this?

A few things. The most common one I see after a fresh battery swap is the CR1632 sitting slightly off-center in the housing. The contact clips in these fobs are thin, and if the old battery was pried out with something sharp, the clip gets a small bend. New battery goes in, looks fine, but the connection is intermittent. The car gets a weak read and throws a key-not-detected warning even though the battery is brand new.

The other thing worth checking: if the 12-volt car battery is marginal, the antenna system that reads your fob loses sensitivity. Owners on CT forums mention this coming up after the car sits for a few weeks or after a jump start. The fob is fine, the car battery is the weak link.

If neither of those is it, the issue could be with one of the door handle antenna assemblies or the interior antenna near the start button. That's when you want diagnostic equipment on it to figure out which antenna is dropping out.

I lost both keys to my 2012 CT. Can a new smart key still be made, or do I need to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost is a completely doable job outside the dealer. It does require professional diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle to clear the existing key registrations and enroll new ones. There's no onboard button sequence or ignition trick for the smart key system on this car. That approach only applies to older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder, which the CT's smart system is not.

Once the old keys are wiped from the system, the new fob gets registered and the emergency insert blade gets cut to the vehicle. The previous fobs, wherever they are, can no longer start the car. Expect the job to run about 30 to 45 minutes on site, depending on how the reset sequence times out.
