He was parked off Bonita Road, about as close to the foothills as you can get in that part of Chula Vista. Nice stretch of afternoon, the kind where you wonder why anyone would want to be inside a dealer waiting room.
He had just picked up a 2022 Lexus LC from a private seller a few weeks before. One key. The seller mentioned getting a spare but never followed through, and the new owner figured he would deal with it eventually. Then "eventually" became "right now" when he sat down, set the fob on the center console instead of keeping it on him, and the car gave him a key-not-detected warning at startup. The fob was inches away but the car wanted it held closer to the start button. That spooked him enough to call about a spare that same day.
He had already called the dealer. The number they gave him for a programmed spare smart key was a real number, and it landed hard. He found me online and asked if the dealer quote was accurate or inflated. It was accurate for a dealer. It was also not what I charge.
I pulled up to him in Bonita, verified the factory fob on his key was reading and pairing correctly with the vehicle, then got to work on a new fob. The LC uses a more involved security architecture than the average Toyota platform. Programming a second key on these requires proper diagnostic access through the OBD port to register the new fob to the immobilizer. It is not a button-sequence job. I ran the registration, confirmed both fobs were recognized by the vehicle, then verified every button and the door handle passive detection on both keys before I packed up.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes on site. He left with two working keys. The dealer comparison came up once, as an afterthought, right before I drove off. He just shook his head and said he wished he had called first.
