2021 Lexus RC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guest staying near Rancho Santa Fe Village called me on a weekday evening. She had a 2021 Lexus RC and one key. The fob had stopped being detected by the car, the push-button start wouldn't respond, and she was supposed to leave the next morning.
She had already called a Lexus dealer. They told her to tow it in, said they'd need to order the fob, and couldn't give her a firm timeline. She was not going to make her checkout on time if she went that route.
I met her where the car was parked. First thing I checked was the fob itself. CR2032, seated fine, contacts looked clean. I tested proximity range at the door handle and at the start button. The car wasn't seeing it consistently, which pointed past a simple battery issue. The fob needed to be re-paired.
I connected to the OBD port, ran the key registration sequence through my diagnostic equipment, and matched the new fob to her vehicle. Cut the emergency insert blade in the van, tested every function including the hatch release, and walked her through using the backup start method in case the fob battery ever drops again unexpectedly.
Start to finish, about 45 minutes in her parking spot. She checked out the next morning on her own schedule. The dealer was never part of the story after that call.
