2011 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: My 2011 Boxster has a mechanical key. Does that mean there's no chip and no anti-theft?

Not exactly. A mechanical key means the key turns in an ignition cylinder rather than using a push-button start system. But that does not automatically mean the vehicle has no anti-theft element. Some keys of this era do carry a transponder component as part of the security system. If your car starts and immediately stalls, that points to an immobilizer issue rather than a blade issue, and that gets diagnosed and handled on site.

Q: How does what you charge compare to the Porsche dealer?

The dealer route on a late 987 Boxster typically involves ordering a key through Porsche parts, paying shop labor to cut and fit it, and potentially additional time if any security work is needed. Owners on forums have reported quotes ranging from several hundred dollars to well over a thousand depending on what the dealer flags during the appointment.

Q: I still have the broken key. Does that help, or do I need to start from scratch?

Bring it. Even if the blade snapped or the housing cracked, the broken key can still tell me what I need to know. If the blade is damaged but the cuts are still visible, I can decode it directly and cut a replacement to match. If you have both pieces of a snapped blade, even better. Starting from your broken key is almost always faster than decoding the lock cold, and faster means you're back on the road sooner.

Q: Can I get a spare key cut while I'm already having the original replaced?

Yes, and that's the smart move. Once I've decoded the cylinder or pulled the key code, cutting a second blade takes a few minutes and the setup cost is already covered. A lot of Boxster owners end up calling me because they had one key and lost it. The 987 is old enough now that it's showing up at estate sales, private sales, and auction lots where a single key is common.

2011 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Old Poway is quiet at 5am. That's when I pulled into a crossfit gym lot off Midland Road and found a personal trainer standing next to his 2011 Boxster, key in hand, looking at it like it had personally wronged him.

He had bought the car used two years earlier with one key. Always meant to get a spare cut. Never did. Then one morning the key blade tip snapped off inside the ignition cylinder. Not all the way in, just enough to jam. He had pried most of it out with a thin flathead and a lot of patience, but the blade was done.

I pulled the cylinder, extracted the remaining bit of blade, and inspected the cylinder pins for damage. They were fine. I decoded the cylinder on the spot and cut a replacement blade to match the original key code. Fitted it, tested the doors, tested the ignition. Started right up.

He still made his 5am session by about four minutes. He asked about a spare on the way out. I cut him one while I was already set up.

The dealer conversation never really came up. He just thanked me and went inside to coach.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Porsche key replacement so expensive at the dealer?▼

A few things stack up. The key blade for a late 987 Boxster is cut to the original vehicle key code, and dealers typically run that through their parts channel rather than decoding what's already on the car. On top of that, if any immobilizer work is involved, Porsche dealers use their own factory diagnostic platform, and labor rates at a Porsche shop are not the same as a general repair shop.
