I got a call from someone parked near the Naval Base Area in Coronado. She had a 1998 Passat, the original remote flip key, and a fob that had finally given up after what looked like a lot of mileage and a lot of use.
She'd already tried a fresh CR2032. The remote still wouldn't respond. The car did start with the key turned in the ignition, which told me the transponder side was still alive. The failure was in the fob itself: one of the internal contacts had corroded and the remote functions were gone. Lock, unlock, all four buttons, nothing.
I pulled up to her car in the lot, took a look at the original fob first, and confirmed the remote receiver in the car was fine by testing with my gear. The issue was the fob hardware, not the car's side. I transferred the key blade, seated a new CR2032 correctly, and synced the replacement fob to the car's remote receiver. Then I verified the transponder was still reading clean so she wouldn't have a start issue later.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had told her they'd need to order parts and have her back in a few days. She didn't have a few days. She had a parking spot and a schedule.
