Yes, and this is actually one of the more common calls on these flip keys. The folding blade pivots on a small roll pin inside the head. That pin wears, loosens, or shears, and when it goes, the blade can detach mid-turn or snap off in the cylinder.

The extraction itself is done on site with the right picks. Once the broken piece is out, we transfer your original transponder chip and electronics into a quality replacement shell and cut a new blade to match your lock. As long as the original chip comes over intact, no reprogramming is needed. The immobilizer already knows that chip.

One thing to avoid: people have tried epoxy and super glue on a flopping blade and it holds for maybe a week before it fails again in the worst possible place. A proper shell swap is the right fix, not a patch.

What exactly is a remote flip key and why does mine need programming?

Both sides matter. A correctly cut blade that isn't programmed will crank the engine and immediately kill it. The immobilizer doesn't recognize the chip, so it shuts things down. Programming pairs the chip to your specific vehicle through the OBD port using a PIN tied to the car. That process is done on site, no dealer visit needed.

That can mean the chip itself has failed, the key needs reprogramming, or on this generation, something in the cluster-based immobilizer circuit needs attention.

There's an old forum tip about leaving the ignition on for several minutes to reset the immobilizer on certain VW models from this era. It sometimes works on a glitchy read. If you try it and the car still won't start, the key or the system needs hands-on diagnosis. That's where I come in.

Can I buy a replacement flip key online and have it programmed, or do I need to get the whole thing from you?

You can buy a shell and blank online, but there are real risks. The transponder chip inside needs to match what this vehicle's immobilizer expects. A lot of cheap blanks sold online carry the wrong chip type or a chip that looks correct but doesn't meet the original spec. When programming fails, owners assume the locksmith or the programmer is the problem, but it's usually the blank.

If you supply your own key, I'll tell you upfront whether it looks right before I attempt anything. I'd rather have that conversation at the start than have you pay for a programming attempt on a blank that was never going to work. The blanks I carry are sourced for this specific application, and if a blank I supply fails to program, that's on me to sort out.

My Passat starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. If the car starts, the transponder chip is doing its job. The remote functions run on a separate circuit inside the fob, and a dead or weak battery is almost always the first thing to check. Replace the battery, making sure the contacts seat flat, and test again.

If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the issue is usually the receiver module in the car rather than the fob itself. These modules can lose their pairing over time or after a battery disconnect. Re-syncing the remote to the vehicle is a separate procedure from transponder programming, and it's something I handle on site. You don't need a new key, just the right sync process.
