How much more complicated is all-keys-lost on a 2021 Passat compared to cutting a spare?

Significantly more involved. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a programming job through the OBD port. When zero keys exist, the process has to start from scratch. The immobilizer needs to be accessed at a deeper level, existing key data has to be wiped, and new keys have to be generated and enrolled fresh. That takes more time and more sophisticated equipment than a standard add-a-key.

The practical answer: get a spare made while you still have one working key. The cost difference between a spare and an all-keys-lost job is real enough that a second key basically pays for itself the first time it saves you from the harder situation.

Do aftermarket Volkswagen flip keys actually work, or should I stick with OEM spec?

It depends on what you mean by "work." The blade can be cut to fit either way. The issue is the transponder chip inside the housing. On these later Passat models, the chip has to meet specific compatibility requirements for the immobilizer to accept it during programming. Some aftermarket keys sold online carry the right chip. A lot of them don't, and you won't know until programming fails.

We use OEM spec key blanks verified for the 2021 Passat. That's not a sales pitch, it's a time issue. If a cheap blank fails mid-programming, you've lost time and possibly created a more complicated situation. Starting with a verified blank means the job goes clean the first time.

My 2021 Passat starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on my flip key stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Accepted Answer

Probably not. The remote buttons run on the CR2032 battery. The transponder that starts the car is passive and doesn't need the battery at all. So a dead or weak CR2032 will kill your remote functions while leaving ignition completely unaffected.

Pop the fob open, swap the CR2032, and test all five buttons. If they come back, you're done. If the battery is fresh and buttons are still dead, then you're looking at something else, either the contacts inside the housing or the fob electronics. That's a different conversation, but it's still not automatically a full replacement.

The flip blade on my Passat key broke at the hinge. Can the key be repaired or does the whole thing need replacing?

This comes up more than people expect on flip keys. The hinge pin wears down over time, and eventually the blade either wobbles loose or snaps.

Whether it's a repair or a replacement depends on what broke. If it's just the hinge pin, that's a hardware fix. If the blade itself fractured, a new blade gets cut to your vehicle and fitted to the existing housing as long as the transponder inside is still intact. You generally don't need to reprogram anything if the original key body and its chip are undamaged. The transponder goes with the housing, not the blade.
