2011 Volkswagen Passat Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in Rancho Del Oro, a college student called me about her 2011 Volkswagen Passat. She'd bought it used, got one key with it, and that was the plan until the plan fell apart.
The flip hinge on the key housing had been cracking slowly for weeks. She knew it was going but kept using it. Then one morning at a Craigslist meetup in Oceanside, the blade snapped clean off at the hinge. Remote half in her hand. Blade stuck in the door lock. Zero working keys, and she had to be somewhere.
I got there, extracted the blade from the lock cylinder, and checked the chip inside the broken housing. Still intact, still readable. That mattered, because it let me work from what she already had instead of starting from scratch with an all-keys-lost procedure.
I decoded the lock, cut two new blades to spec, and transferred everything into fresh housings. She watched the whole thing from about three feet away, which I like. When I popped the old chip out of the cracked housing and showed it to her, she got it immediately. The thing that looked destroyed was actually the piece that saved us time.
Two working keys in about 40 minutes, done in the parking lot. She mentioned the dealer quote she'd gotten when the hinge first started cracking. It was a lot more than what she paid me, and it would have taken a week.
She needed the car that afternoon. That part worked out.
