I got a call from a guy in the Live Oak Park Area of Fallbrook on a Tuesday afternoon. Surf instructor. His 2017 Volkswagen Passat was sitting in a lot near the neighborhood and his key was gone. His best guess was it came off somewhere in the water during a lesson. No spare, no dealer nearby, and a job lined up the next morning.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition would need to be drilled to extract the lock code. That quote came in well over what I charge for the whole job. He called me asking if that was really necessary.
It isn't.
I decoded his door lock mechanically on site, reading the wafer positions without disturbing the cylinder at all. From that I pulled the cut depth information and produced a working blade. Then I built out the full remote flip key, programmed the transponder through the OBD port using the all-keys-lost procedure, and synced the remote functions. The old key, wherever it ended up, was erased from the system.
When I handed it to him he folded the blade out, unlocked the door, started the car, and folded it back. That was it.
He asked why the other locksmith went straight to drilling. Honestly, some guys don't have the decode tools for European locks and drilling is what they know. It's not the right call on a Passat. The cylinder is fine, the lock is fine, and he drove off with a complete key for a fraction of what that other quote was going to cost him.
