2002 Volkswagen Passat Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A shop teacher from San Diego Country Estates called me on a Tuesday morning. He teaches automotive at the high school level, so he came into the call more informed than most.
He'd watched some of my work online, recognized the process, and still had one question before I arrived: "Is the remote and the key really two separate systems?" Yes and no, I told him. One unit, two functions, two ways to fail.
His 2002 Passat flip key had gotten to the point where he had to stand right next to the car to get a response from the remote, and some mornings it wouldn't respond at all. The blade still turned, the car still started. So the transponder was fine. The remote side was the problem.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood of the car. The CR2032 read low on the meter, but more telling was the contact plate, it had a thin film of corrosion from sitting against a slightly oxidized battery. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and got range back. While I was at it, I checked the flip pivot, which had some play in it. Not enough to cause problems yet, but enough to note.
Then I built him a second key, a full replacement unit, programmed through the OBD port. He now has a working spare for the first time in years. Tested every button, three clean starts, confirmed range from across the parking lot.
He said the dealer wanted a significant amount for the same job, and they told him it would take a few days because the part had to be ordered. I was there in under an hour, start to finish, and he drove away with two working keys.
