I got a call from a guy parked near La Mesa Village. He had a 1996 Volvo S40 and his only key had a cracked plastic head. The blade was fine, the key turned, the car ran. He just wanted a working spare before the original fell apart completely and left him stranded.

My key shell is cracking. Can you replace it without reprogramming?▼

On the 1996 S40, the transponder chip is embedded in the key head, not in a separate removable module. That means a shell swap isn't as clean as it is on some later systems where you can just move a chip carrier. If the chip is still reading correctly, there are ways to transfer it, but it has to be done carefully to avoid damaging the chip or its connection. The blade is a separate piece we cut fresh.
