I got a call from Bressi Ranch on a Tuesday evening. Guy had two keys when he bought the S40, lost one somewhere over the past year, and then the remaining fob went completely dead. No lock, no unlock, no response at all. The car still started, which tells you something useful right there.
He'd already bought a replacement battery from a drugstore. Wrong size. It was seated in the cavity but not making solid contact, so the fob was getting just enough power to do nothing consistently. Classic intermittent fault that looks like a bigger problem.
I swapped in the correct CR2450, cleaned the contact points, and tested every button on the fob before I even mentioned the word programming. Buttons came right back. The transponder chip was never the issue -- the immobilizer had been reading it fine all along, which is why the car kept starting.

I had the correct replacement fob shell and a blank already matched to his vehicle on hand, so we handled the second key right there in his driveway. Got both programmed, tested the remote functions and the ignition on each one, and he had a spare again for the first time in over a year.
The whole job took less time than the tow he was mentally preparing for. Dealer comparison didn't even come up -- he just wanted to be back to normal before dark, and we got there.
