I was out in Winter Gardens, Lakeside, on a call for a 1997 Volvo S40. The owner had a key that turned fine, no cylinder drama, no binding. But the car would catch, run for a second or two, and shut right back down. He'd been troubleshooting it for two days thinking it was a fuel issue.

That start-then-stall behavior on a mid-nineties Volvo is the immobilizer doing exactly what it was designed to do. The key blade was fine. What had failed was the transponder chip inside the key head. He'd had a spare made at a hardware store at some point, and somewhere along the way that became his daily key. A blade-only copy with no chip, or a chip that was never enrolled, is invisible to the ignition cylinder. The car starts on inertia and kills itself the moment the immobilizer check comes back wrong.
I cut a replacement key blade to match his lock and enrolled the transponder to his vehicle on site. Then I did what I always do before I call a job finished: three cold starts, walked the key through the full ignition cycle each time, and confirmed the engine held idle without stalling.
He'd been one call away from a tow truck and a dealership that would have charged him a lot more for the same answer. We handled it in his driveway, no tow, no waiting on a parts order.
