In Coronado Village, over near the residential side close to the bay, a woman called me about her 2007 Volvo S40. She had owned it for a few years, bought it used with one fob, always meant to get a spare cut, never did. The usual story.

What made this one different was how it ended up in my hands. The fob housing had cracked along the seam -- common on these with age -- and she had been living with it taped together for a while. The day everything went wrong, she tried to use the emergency blade for the first time ever, yanked it out at a bad angle, and the tip snapped inside the door lock. One cracked fob body, one blade fragment in the lock cylinder, zero working keys.

I got there with my tools and the first thing I did was pull the fragment. The lock was not damaged, just blocked. I decoded the cylinder while I had it accessed.

Then I looked at the fob. The housing was done, but I opened it carefully and the internal board was clean. No corrosion, no cracked solder. I transferred the board into a new compatible shell, verified the transponder was reading correctly, and cut two new blades to the code I pulled from the lock. Tested both in the ignition, both at the doors.

She went from zero keys to two working fobs in under an hour. I showed her the original board so she could see why it was worth saving rather than starting the whole process over. She had been quoted a number by the dealer that made her wait two weeks before calling me. What she paid me was a fraction of what they wanted.

If your fob housing is cracked and you still have all the pieces, do not throw anything away. Call first.
