There is no foldout or hidden blade because this is not a smart key or proximity fob. The key itself goes into the ignition cylinder the same way any traditional key does. What matters on this vehicle is that the chip inside the key head is the correct type and is properly enrolled to the immobilizer. If the key turns but the engine cranks and immediately stalls or refuses to fire, that points to an anti-theft issue we diagnose and handle on site.

I bought a replacement key blank online for my 1998 S40. Can I just have it cut and will it work?

Cutting the blade is only half the job. The key blank also needs the correct transponder chip inside the head, and that chip has to be programmed to your specific vehicle's immobilizer. If the blank you bought has the wrong chip type inside, or no chip at all, the key will turn in the ignition and the engine will crank but it will not stay running. The immobilizer cuts it off. This is one of the most common problems I see with S40 owners who sourced their own blank before calling me. Bring the blank and I will check what chip is inside before we go any further. If it is correct, we program it. If it is not, we swap it for the right one.

My S40 starts fine but the remote locking on the key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Accepted Answer

Probably not. On the 1998 S40, the transponder function and the remote locking function are two separate systems. The transponder handles starting the car. The remote handles locking and unlocking. They are enrolled independently. If the car starts fine, the transponder side is good. A remote that stopped working is usually an enrollment issue or a receiver problem in the car, not a failed key. We can re-enroll the remote portion on site without touching the transponder programming.
