I got a call from someone parked near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach. He'd lost his only key somewhere between a gallery visit and walking back to the lot. No spare at home, no second set, nothing. The S40 was just sitting there.

The immobilizer security data lives inside the body electronics module, and you can't just write a new key without reading what's already there. I pulled the module, read the stored data off the chip directly, used that to generate a new transponder key, and wrote everything back. Then I cut the blade to match what I'd decoded from the lock.
First turn of the key, the car started. He was back on the road without a tow, without waiting days for parts to be ordered, and for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
The job took longer than a standard spare-key cut. Volvo all-keys-lost always does. But it's a field job when you have the right bench tools with you, which I do.
