Got a call from a guy in Bostonia, the eastern side of El Cajon, sometime around 2 in the morning. His 2009 S40 was sitting in the driveway and his only remote head key had stopped being recognized by the car. He could still physically get in and turn the ignition but the car would not start. He had already priced out flatbeds for the morning.

When I got there, the key itself was worn down from years of daily use. The blade still turned in the cylinder but the immobilizer was not seeing the transponder. He had two issues happening at once, which is not uncommon on a 15-year-old key that has been on a crowded keyring since new.

I connected my programmer to the OBD port, went through the Volvo key learning sequence for this generation, and cut a fresh key blank to his vehicle. Both the transponder and the remote functions tested clean before I packed up.

He had been mentally prepared to call in sick and spend his morning at the dealer waiting room. That did not happen.

The dealer comparison came up on its own. He had already looked up what the dealer would charge, and what he paid me was a fraction of what they wanted, with no tow and no lost morning.
