My key shell is cracked and the plastic is coming apart. Can you swap it without reprogramming the whole key?

Sometimes, yes. It depends on whether the internal electronics are still intact and undamaged. The transponder chip itself is a passive component with no battery, and if it survived whatever cracked the shell, it can be transferred into a replacement housing without touching the immobilizer programming. The remote circuit board is a different story. If that's damaged or the contacts are corroded, you may be looking at a full replacement rather than a shell swap. I check all of that on site before committing to either path. On a car this age, cracked shells are common, and the failure mode is usually physical wear around the blade pivot or moisture getting into the remote board over years of use. Bring the whole key, even if it looks rough.

What is a transponder key and why does the 1999 S40 need one?

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the head of the key. When you insert it and turn it, the immobilizer antenna around the ignition barrel reads that chip. If the chip responds with the right signal, the immobilizer clears and the engine is allowed to run. If the chip is missing, unrecognized, or unprogrammed, the car cranks and then immediately dies, usually within one to two seconds. That's the immobilizer doing its job.

Your 1999 S40 came with this system from the factory. It's not optional and it can't be bypassed by cutting a key that fits the lock. The blade gets you to cranking. The chip gets you to starting. Both have to be right.

My Volvo cranks but immediately stalls, or it shows a key-related warning. What's going on?

On a 1999 S40, a crank-and-immediate-stall is the immobilizer's standard response to a key it doesn't recognize. It's not a fuel problem, not an engine problem. The car is designed to behave exactly that way when the transponder signal fails to clear the security system.

A few things cause this. The transponder chip in the key can fail on its own after years of use. The antenna ring around the ignition barrel, which reads the chip, degrades over time and is a known wear item on cars of this era. Or the key was never properly programmed to begin with, which happens when owners buy a cut-only key from a non-specialist and assume it will work.

A key-not-detected warning on the dash points the same direction. Don't assume the engine has a mechanical fault until the key system has been properly diagnosed. I carry the diagnostic equipment to read the immobilizer on site and sort out which part of the chain is broken.

I bought a replacement key online and had it cut locally, but the car still won't start. What did I miss?

The blade being cut correctly is only half the job. The transponder chip inside that key still has to be programmed to your specific vehicle's immobilizer. A key that isn't programmed will crank the engine and kill it in about a second, every time. Cutting gets you into the ignition. Programming gets you on the road.

This is one of the most common calls I get on older transponder key vehicles. The key looks right, it turns, and nothing happens. Bring the key you bought and I can tell you on the spot whether the chip is the right type and whether it can still be programmed, or whether you need to start over with the right hardware.

I only have one key for my 1999 S40. Is it worth getting a spare cut and programmed now?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and do it while you still have a working key. Adding a spare when you have one working key is a much simpler job than all-keys-lost, where the immobilizer has no enrolled key to reference. All-keys-lost on a vehicle with this type of security system takes more time, more diagnostic work, and more steps to recover. Getting a spare made now, while the car starts and drives normally, keeps you in the easier and less costly situation. One working key is already one dropped key or one bad day away from a much harder problem.
