I got a call from a woman parked near the waterfront in Downtown National City. She had a 1999 Volvo S40, one key, and it had stopped starting the car. Key went in, turned fine, engine cranked, then died within a second or two. Classic immobilizer behavior.
She had already been to a shop that told her it was probably the engine. I didn't think so.
I pulled up alongside her in the service van and started where you always start on a car this age: the ignition barrel itself and the antenna ring around it. On a 25-year-old Volvo, that ring takes a lot of heat and vibration cycles, and it's not uncommon to see the connection get unreliable before anything else fails. I checked it, tested with my diagnostics, and confirmed the issue was in the key-to-immobilizer communication chain, not the engine.
I cut a replacement key blade to match her lock, programmed the transponder to register with her immobilizer, and then did the part that matters: three consecutive starts, a real crank each time, letting the car idle for a moment before shutting it down. Then I tested the remote functions. Then I walked away from the car and approached it again the way she would on an ordinary errand, just to confirm the whole sequence felt normal.
She had been told the repair was going to be a multi-day process at the dealer. I was done in her parking spot. The dealer quote she mentioned was, in her words, a lot. What she paid me was a fraction of that.
The shop that blamed the engine never checked the key system at all.
