Three things to watch for. First, they say they handle all makes but get vague or evasive the moment you say Volvo. These vehicles have a specific central electronic module architecture, and a lot of generalist shops either lack the tooling or lack the experience. Second, they show up with a basic universal programmer and start improvising. Third, they fail the job and still charge a trip fee.

A real Volvo locksmith knows your year and configuration before they ever schedule. Ask them directly: can you do a 2007 XC70 remote flip key through OBD, or does the central electronic module have to come out? If they hesitate or redirect, that tells you something. The shops that quote wildly inflated numbers and describe the job as nearly impossible are often the same ones who cannot actually complete it.

What exactly is a remote flip key and what does it do on this car?

It is the key your 2007 XC70 came with from the factory. The blade folds into the fob body and snaps out when you press the release. There are five buttons on the face for remote functions. Inside the fob is a transponder chip that the vehicle's immobilizer reads every time you turn the key. If the chip is not recognized, the car will crank and then immediately cut off, or it will not start at all.

The fob and the blade are both part of the same unit. Cutting a blade without programming the chip does nothing. Programming a chip without a properly cut blade means you cannot turn the ignition. Both halves have to be right.

On the 2007 XC70, the central electronic module controls immobilizer pairing. With a working key present, a Volvo-capable tool connected to the OBD port can read the module and register a new key without any disassembly. That is the clean version of the job.

All-keys-lost changes things. Without a reference key, the module often needs to come out and be read directly, which requires bench equipment and adapters built specifically for this module family. Generic programmers skip over that entirely and either fail silently or throw errors.

This is why tooling matters. I carry equipment that handles the OBD path and the bench path, so the job does not stall halfway through because the fast route closed off.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or bring it to you to finish the job?

You can bring it. If the blank is the correct fitment for the 2007 XC70 and the blade profile matches your ignition, I can program it using the OBD path as long as you have a working key with you.

That said, a lot of the fobs sold online are listed with broad compatibility claims that do not hold up. If the fob body, blade, and internal components are not correct for this specific application, programming will not fix that. Bring what you have and I can check it on site before we go further. If it is not right, I carry correct blanks in the van.

My 2007 XC70 starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032 battery. On this fob, a weak battery will kill the remote range and button response long before it affects the transponder, so the car keeps starting while the locks go silent. Swap the battery, test all five buttons from a normal distance.

If a fresh CR2032 does not fix it, the fob itself may have an internal issue, or it may need to be re-paired to the vehicle. That is a quick diagnostic. The fact that the engine starts and runs normally is actually useful information: it tells you the immobilizer side is healthy and the problem lives in the remote transmitter circuit. That narrows it down fast.
