A shop in Del Mar, over in Carmel Valley, does European vehicles. Good reputation, serious techs. They had a 2011 XC70 in the bay after a timing belt job, and the owner needed a replacement smart key while the car was already there. The shop called a locksmith. That locksmith plugged in, got an error reading the CEM, and left. Didn't say much. Just packed up and went.
By the time the shop called me, the car was completely unresponsive. The CEM was sitting in a fault state from the incomplete attempt. No new key would register. The shop foreman told me two other locksmiths had already passed on it after hearing what happened.
I brought my module-level programming equipment. Pulled the CEM, read the secured data off the chip directly, cleared the corruption from the failed session, and wrote it back clean. Then I generated a fresh key pair from the dump and registered the factory fob, the six-button unit with the factory FCC ID on it, against the restored module. First clean attempt after reinstall. CEM came back up, key was accepted, all functions tested out.
I walked the shop team through what the previous attempt had done wrong, so they'd know what to tell a customer if it came up again.
The whole job was about two hours including module removal and reinstall. The alternative was a flatbed to the Volvo dealer, a possible CEM replacement, and a week with no car. The owner got his key and drove home that afternoon.
